Elliott House: A Community Choice, A Legacy Renewed

Before the planning process began, early community engagement sessions raised the suggestion that we explore a potential renaming of the building. In response, we took time to reflect on its rich history and the significance of each name it has held. Originally opened as the Passmore Edwards Convalescent Home for Railwaymen, the building became Heronswood in 1981 and was later renamed Elliott House. This journey through names traces the evolution of the site and its role within the community—setting the stage for the thoughtful conversation that followed.

When we first invited the people of Kent to help us reimagine the story of Elliott House, we hoped the community would respond with the same warmth and care that has defined this landmark for generations. You did not disappoint.

Everyone came together to consider the names that would carry this historic building and its new chapter forward. It was never just about a name—it was about identity, memory, and belonging.

After weeks of voting, we are delighted to share the results.

Elliott House remains the proud name of the restored landmark, a decision that honours both continuity and affection. The original name holds deep significance and continues to resonate. By keeping it, we safeguard its heritage while breathing new life into its story.

For the new access road, the community has chosen Elliott Way. It is a fitting companion to the building, ensuring that both the landmark and its approach are tied together in identity and spirit.

This outcome reflects more than a simple preference. It demonstrates how strongly the community values connection to place and continuity across generations.
