Building Safer Sites: Mental Health First Aiders across our Construction Sites

We are proud to share we now have two trained Mental Health First Aiders on site, reinforcing our commitment to creating a safer, more supportive working environment for everyone.

Tony Kandert and Thomas Bambach have both successfully completed a certified Mental Health Awareness qualification. This CPD certified course equips individuals with the knowledge to recognise signs of poor mental health, provide initial support, and guide colleagues towards appropriate help.

Their certification reflects not only personal commitment but also a wider cultural shift across the construction industry—one that recognises mental health as equally important as physical safety.

The need for this support is clear. According to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, suicide remains one of the biggest silent crises in our sector. Construction workers are four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average, and it is estimated that two construction workers take their own life every working day in the UK. These are stark figures that underline why initiatives like Mental Health First Aid are not just beneficial—they are essential.

Having trained individuals on site means:

  • Early signs of mental health struggles can be recognised

  • Conversations around wellbeing are normalised

  • Colleagues have a trusted point of contact for support

  • A more open and supportive site culture is fostered

At Elliott House and Sea Road, this is part of a broader commitment to ensuring everyone goes home not just physically safe but mentally supported too.

This is a meaningful step forward and one we will continue to build on.
